MDMA is a synthetic psychoactive substance that acts as both a stimulant and an empathogen. In its crystalline or powdered form, often referred to as “MDMA crystal” or “molly",” it is usually taken orally (in capsules or wrapped in paper), dissolved in liquid, or sometimes snorted. It is chemically related to both amphetamines and mescaline.
MDMA became widely known as a party drug in the 1980s, particularly in the rave and electronic dance music scene. However, in recent years it has also been investigated for its potential therapeutic use in the treatment of PTSD, depression and anxiety when administered under clinical supervision.
