Promethazine with codeine is an oral prescription syrup used to treat upper respiratory symptoms such as persistent cough, runny nose and sneezing due to colds or allergies. It contains two active ingredients: promethazine, an antihistamine with sedative properties that helps relieve allergy symptoms, and codeine, a mild opioid that suppresses coughing by acting on the cough reflex center of the brain.
